ERS - Books and Story Guide

A guide to the Extended Railway Series volumes and stories posted on SiF since 2003

ERS 42 – Edward's Branch Line - 2003 - Ryan Healy
Edward's Branch Line still remains one of my favourite ERS volumes.  The Wellsworth Branch was largely overlooked throughout the Railway Series, so this was a chance to put things right by focussing on Boco, Edward, Bill and Ben for a change.  It also holds the distinction of being the first ERS volume adapted for audio production - a feat of which I am very proud.

 BOCO'S TRACTOR BANG
During the busy market period, the Vicar employs Shane, an unruly Tractor, to deliver his apples for him.  Shane is unimpressed with the prescence of the old fashioned machinery on Sodor, and isn't shy about saying so.  But the tables are soon turned when he breaks down on the level crossing, just as Boco is approaching with a long line of heavy trucks.  Boco fails to stop in time, running into Shane in the process.  Luckily for Shane, the damage is limited, but all the same, he's sent home in disgrace.

EDWARD'S ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE
Whilst Boco is away the works for repairs, the Fat Controller drafts James in to help instead.  James doesn't enjoy the fact he has to shunt his own trucks, and his rough handling of trucks from the Other Railway makes them cross - and determined to pay him out.  However, when Edward has to take them instead, the new trucks decide to play tricks on him instead.  When they begin trying to push him along, Edward knows he has to think fast - and uses the knowledge of his branch line to his advantage and regains control of the train.

THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE SHED
Bill teases Ben about ghosts and ghouls in their yard, but soon finds this backfiring on him when he's left alone in the shed and hears some strange noises.  Bill is convinced there is a monster living in their shed, but Ben doesn't believe him.  The following night, the same noises happen again - so the Drivers decide to investigate.  Much to their surprise, they find something - but it's not a monster, it's some little birds trapped in the pipes in the shed!  The Vicar makes a safe home for them in the Orchard, and the twins make up their quarrel.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Edward begins to wonder about life beyond the Island of Sodor, and stretching his wheels elsewhere.  But he soon forgets all about these passing notions when a storm rages across the Island - and puts him and his train in grave peril when a tree in the Orchard begins hanging procariously over the line.  The quick thinking of Trevor, Boco and Terence - together with Edward's own determination averts a very serious accident, and the old blue engine realises that there is nowhere he'd rather be than with his friends on the Island of Sodor.
